After cementing his status as one of the most exciting young coaches in the British Basketball League last season by guiding his side to Trophy Final glory, Gareth Murray has signed a long-term extension as Head Coach of the Caledonia Gladiators, keeping him with the Scottish outfit until 2026.
Having led the Gladiators to their first piece of silverware
in 20 years last term, Murray is on the verge of taking Caledonia through
another historic campaign in the 2023/24 season as the club look to challenge
for further domestic honours, and also enter European competition for the first
time ever in the Basketball Champions League.
Having officially retired from playing in the summer of 2022
to fully commit to his career off the court, Murray began his coaching
adventure in 2020 as a Player-Head Coach for the Gladiators and has since
solidified his reputation as one of the League’s most must-see play callers.
With 58 caps to his name for the Great Britain National Team, Murray has also taken his coaching talents to the National Team level in recent times as an Assistant Coach to the Men’s team, and featured in two Commonwealth Games as a player for Scotland.
Upon signing his extension, Coach Murray said:
“Moving to a new arena helps build the club, it helps
to bring in bigger and better players. We’re putting together a team this year
that will be exciting to watch, but we also want to do well in Europe and the
British Basketball League. It feels great for me to be part of the club that
I’ve been involved with for many years.”
Caledonia Head of Men’s Basketball Sean Skelly added:
“I have seen first-hand the professional growth Gareth has shown over the last three seasons as a coach, culminating in a fantastic Trophy win. I am absolutely delighted to have him signed up to the club until 2026 and I look forward to at least three more years of progression and successes to come.”
