Towering forward Jordan Hunt joins Surrey Scorchers from New Zealand NBL side Hawke’s Bay Hawks ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The two-time NBL champion and FIBA Asia Cup (2022) medallist started his career in his hometown of Wellington, New Zealand, before moving to the United States to play college basketball at Sothern Oregon Raiders.
During his college career Hunt was named All-Cascade Conference honourable mention two times and finished his four years in America on 1,147 points, which saw him rank 11th on the school’s All-Time Scorers list.
The 6’9’’ powerhouse made his NZNBL debut in 2015 and was a part of their 2016 Championship-winning side. He returned to New Zealand in 2020 when he was acquired by the Otago Nuggets in a draft prior to the COVID-19-altered 2020 season.
That same year he helped Nuggets become Champions as they defeated Manawatu Jets 79-77 in the Championship Final behind Hunt’s team-high of 21 points, which earned him a Grand Final MVP.
The Kiwi moved to Australian side Cairns Taipans in 2020 before returning to New Zealand and Hawke’s Bay Hawks in 2021, where he helped the side reach the Grand Final that same year. Last season Hunt averaged 10.8 points per game, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists for the Hawks.
He made his international debut for his country in February 2021 and went on to be a part of the bronze medal-winning squad at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup in Jakarta.
On making his debut in the British Basketball League, Hunt said:
“I’m excited to be joining the Scorchers this season! I’m looking forward to getting to work with my teammates and building towards a successful season.”
Surrey Scorchers Head Coach, Lloyd Gardner, said:
“Jordan is a player that is going to bring versatility to our front line. He has great experience with the New Zealand National Team, where he has shown his ability. He can play multiple positions for us and will stretch the opposition’s defence with his perimeter shooting.
“I’m excited to have Jordan start his European pro-career with us and know that the Scorchers’ fans will enjoy him being part of our team.”
