The Caledonia Gladiators have continued their swift start to the summer by confirming the return of veteran forward Princeton Onwas for the 2023/24 BBL season.
The 28-year-old etched his name into Gladiators folklore last season as he secured the assist to David Sloan’s epic game-winning British Basketball League Trophy bucket at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, bringing major honours back to Scotland for the first time in 20 years.
Onwas, a Texas native, is a veteran of the professional game,
with his resume including time in Australia, the NBA G-League, Germany and
Spain, with that experience and leadership proving vital in a successful debut
campaign for the rebranded and revitalised Gladiators.
The 6’6″ forward was a key piece in Coach Gareth Murray’s rotation last season, starting 29 out of 36 games in the Championship and proving himself to be one of the top defenders in the league, earning a nomination to the 2022/23 Molten British Basketball League All-Defensive Team of the Year.
After putting pen to paper on a new one-year deal, Onwas
said:
“I’m excited to be back, as well as take on more
challenges and responsibilities. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates
again and also meeting new ones. I’m extremely excited for the new arena to be
built and for the club to push to win more trophies!”
Coach Murray added:
“Prince was a key player for our team last year. He
consistently delivered strong defence and had a winning mentality day in and
day out. When the team needed someone to step up and score, he had the ability
to light up the scoreboard.
“With experience playing in different leagues, Prince brings
a well-rounded skill set. What sets him apart is his selflessness and his focus
on the success of his teammates.”
Onwas is Caledonia’s fifth signing of the summer – all of which are returning players from last season – including Fahro Alihodzic, Fraser Malcolm, Jonny Bunyan and Kyle Jimenez, with more new signings sure to be on the way in the coming weeks.
