Klay Thompson wants to make most of remaining 1 year of his contract with Warriors

Since entering the NBA in 2011, Klay Thompson has been playing for the Warriors. The 32-year-old shooting guard has one more year left on his current contract and will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024, unless he signs an extension before that.

There was some doubt whether he can be his old self after missing two years of basketball, but Thompson is proving he still has it. Most recently he dropped 54 points in the win against the Hawks.

Thompson is aware of his contractual situation and say he just wants to enjoy his time with the Warriors while he is still here.

“I’m definitely more relaxed that I was in the beginning,” the four-time NBA champion said. “I think in the beginning I was just so eager to be back to those big nights like tonight and proving whoever wrong that I’m still great.

“I mean it’s going by so fast. We’re almost at the halfway point. And this year there’s only one year left on my deal, so it’s, like, I just told myself, like, ‘Man, I got to enjoy every day in a Warriors uniform,’ like, this is such an incredible position to be in as defending champions and to see the banners we’ve hung and just the brand that’s been built there.

“I just had to remind myself daily, like, this is literally a dream I’m living and what matters most is just having fun and playing hard. All the numbers, all the big nights will come as long as I do those two things.”

This season Thompson is averaging 20.3 points, 4 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 32.1 minutes per game.
