With the Newcastle Eagles desperately looking to continue
their winning streak to climb up the British Basketball League standings, their
start against the Plymouth City Patriots showed we had a tight affair.
Tajh Green and Rickey McGill combined nicely for the Eagles
in the first quarter. The guard-forward duo combined for 13 points off six
shots, with Jordan Johnson also adding four points of his own for the starting
five.
The Patriots had a much better start after their loss to the
Eagles in the previous game week, with TJ Atwood scoring eight points off only
two shots.
Tyrell Green also scored five points off the bench for the
Patriots, with the team from Plymouth, making this game a much more even one
than previously.
The second quarter followed the same script as the first
quarter, with the Eagles and Patriots staying consistent, but the score
differential staying the same.
Tajh Green started to show the scoring that got him MVP
predictions at the start of the season with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting by the
end of the half, to go with six rebounds.
Josh Ward-Hibbert started to show the form he showed in
their last encounter with the Patriots, scoring six points in the second
quarter and finishing with nine by the end of the half.
Tyrell Green was making this a battle of the Greens with 15
points by his name. The guard off the bench showed his ability to fill in for
the absent Mason Faulkner, while Spencer Levi had eight points on a perfect
4-for-4 shooting.
Second Half
The score was 50-45 by the end of the first half.
The second half seemed to be the one in which the Eagles stopped playing with their food and were ready to sink the Plymouth City Patriots once again.
A 28-point third quarter ensued for Newcastle with Jordan
Johnson exploding for 11 points in the quarter, while Ward-Hibbert continued
his hot scoring off the bench.
The Patriots were struggling to get going, with star player
Taylor Johnson finishing the third quarter with only six points on a total of
six shots. Tyrell Green continued his scoring, ending the quarter with 20, but wasn’t
enough to catch the Eagles.
Finishing the third quarter, the Newcastle Eagles were up
78-63.
The fourth quarter reverted to how the teams had been
playing in the first half with both equalling each other out.
This of course meant that the Patriots couldn’t end up catching the Eagles, ultimately losing 98-82.
Player of the Game
Tonight’s Player of the Game was Jordan Johnson of the Newcastle Eagles. The Newcastle guard scored 24 points and put in an amazing 13 assists.
