Making their first move of the summer, the Surrey Scorchers have this evening announced that Josh Steel will remain at Surrey Sports Park for the 2023/24 season.
The fans’ favorite made his return to the Scorchers last season after playing a key part in the Manchester Giants’ successful 2021/22 campaign, where he averaged eight points, two rebounds and two assists per game.
Having gained invaluable experience as a young player with Kent Crusarders before moving on to Duquense University in the United States, Steel signed his first professional contract with Surrey Scorchers in the summer of 2017.
After a successful rookie season, where the 6ft 5’’ guard averaged 10 points-per-game, the man from Harlow was retained by Scorchers for the 2018/19 season, before Steel made the move overseas to join Spanish side Froca Lleida and proceeded to play for Moron and Clinica Ponferrada CDP.
A return to the BBL in 2021 to play for Manchester Giants saw Steel join up with now-Scorchers Head Coach, Lloyd Gardner, who both previously worked at Barking Abbey Academy together. Having played a key role with the Giants, Steel reunited with Coach Gardner at the Surrey Sports Park ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Steel has represented England at Under-16 and 18 level, whilst featuring for Great Britain at Under-20 level before making the transition to the Senior National Team and played in the EuroBasket Pre-Qualifiers in 2022.
Following confirmation of his return to SSP, Josh Steel said:
“I’m excited the news is finally out, I want it to be a memorable one for us at SSP this season and be a real step in a new direction for the franchise.”
Head Coach, Lloyd Gardner added:
“I’m delighted to welcome Josh back to the Scorchers. He adds so much to any team he plays on with his ability on both ends of the floor and his unselfish play. Injuries frustrated his season last year, but I know Josh is ready to take another step forward in his career.”
