With 27 major titles in the British Basketball League already under his belt, Serios Group Newcastle Eagles and League legend Darius Defoe has returned to the north-east for another season with Head Coach Marc Steutel’s side.
The 38-year-old embodies everything that is great about the Eagles
franchise, playing a hand in all of their most famous moments in the League,
and will be looking to lead Newcastle to further glory this season as they
venture into European competition for the first time.
Defoe made 34 Regular Season appearances for the Eagles last
season – his most since the 2009/10 campaign – showing the veteran big man is
offering no signs of slowing down.
The 38-year-old joined the club in 2004, and it is fitting that he should have guided them through so many incredible moments, and will now lead them into another first as the Eagles compete in the European North Basketball League (ENBL) this season.
Speaking on the return of Defoe, Coach Steutel said:
“Darius might well turn out to be our most important signing
of the summer. To be able to return the club captain and a legend of the
British game is hugely important.
“Darius epitomises what we’re about at this club and it’s
vital that he’s here to help shape a new group of players with plenty to prove.
“He’s fully on board with the club’s first official venture into Europe and I think it’s fitting that he’ll be there when we make that move. We’re taking a big step forward and it’s right that Darius is a part of that. He’s been through everything with this club and I can’t imagine playing in the ENBL without him.”
